MEMF School Competition: Designing for Wellbeing in the Built Environment
The CSTT is thrilled to announce the launch of the annual MEMF School Competition, titled “Designing for Wellbeing in the Built Environment.” This exciting competition provides young people across the UK with a platform to showcase their creativity and innovation while exploring the impact of the built environment on wellbeing.
The theme of this year’s competition was introduced in response to valuable feedback from teachers, focusing on the crucial aspect of wellbeing. Participants, aged 11 to 18, are challenged to redesign a local building or space, considering wellbeing from both an individual and societal perspective. The built environment surrounds us in our everyday lives and has the potential to significantly influence our wellbeing, happiness, and overall quality of life. Through this competition, the CSTT aims to highlight the role the next generation can play in shaping the wellbeing of society through innovative design within the built environment.
Building upon the success of previous years, the competition follows a similar format, inviting young people from across the UK to create proposals that explore the site, incorporate new designs, and consider sustainability and the local community, all through the lens of wellbeing. Participants will be judged in three separate age categories, judged by the CSTT and industry experts. The MEMF School Competition has become a highly anticipated event for the MEMF team. It provides a unique opportunity to witness the remarkable creativity and innovation of students as they engage with the built environment, often for the first time. Last year, over 850 students participated in the competition, with an overwhelming 95% expressing their enjoyment and enthusiasm in showcasing their creativity and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, 90% mentioned that their participation deepened their understanding of the built environment and the diverse range of careers available in this sector, inspiring them to consider future career opportunities.
To support participants, the MEMF team has developed two student competition briefs for ages 11-14 and 15-18. These serve as guides and include a presentation template with hints and tips to assist with entries. The first webinar, which focuses on the school competition, can be found on the MEMF YouTube channel and website.
